off balance on snatch

I've been practicing snatch with just the bar and the momentum of the bar when going into the overhead squat position usually throws me back...any suggestions to not lose my balance, thanks

Re: off balance on snatch

If it keeps throwing you back then you aren't pulling vertical, you're swinging it around in front. Try to pull straight up and pull yourself under it. Maybe take a video of you doing some and post in the digital coaching forum.

Check out (wfs). There is a series of videos on the snatch. You can thank Jon Gilson for them. (and many other great videos there as well...)

Re: off balance on snatch

Keep your elbows high after the second pull and attempt to bruch your chest with the bar. That should solve your problem.

In addition to the above suggestions which may or may not correct your problem - depends on what's causing the problem - be sure you're activating the shoulder girdle. Lock everything in tight. Think, "Reach for the ceiling."
If it's sore - ice it. If it's torn - tape it. If it's heavy - lift it!

Re: off balance on snatch

To add to what Veronica said - stop thinking of the OH position as the end of an external rotation, and think of it as a drive up. The turn over is a turn + a push - if you just turn, you're going to swing it behind you (until it gets heavy, and then you're just going to miss it entirely). Work some muscle snatches and snatch balances to get a better feel for the movement.
