Starting an Affilliate on a Part-time basis

I am thinking about starting an affiliate. My wife and I would run it together. She is a Physical Therapist and could be essentially full-time on the business. I would only be available part-time (weekends and occasional week nights). Does anyone have experience with starting up in this way. I think we would probably need to find some other trainers on a part-time or per class basis. Any suggestions on how best to find trainers to do that? Thanks to all in advance for any advice you can provide.

Re: Starting an Affilliate on a Part-time basis

Mike, hey bro

it will work

i run my gym part time

5 - 8 pm on weekdays, no weekends
friday i shut down at 7 pm

weekends are for the family

you can easily add a weekend class or two, or maybe a free saturday / intro class

if your wife is full time, she can run 1 or 2 morning classes

you'll make a FULL TIME income like this

allow your clients to bring in a friend for trial workouts, etc.

word can spread as fast as u want it to

will you speak to groups and do hands on demos for them

create community within your gym

i bet you will bro

start w/ a small box

you want minimal overhead

buy your equip. used from e bay and craigs list

dumbbells, med balls, oly bars, etc.

as the income flows, reinvest and slowly bring in new equip.

you can have pull up bars, etc. welded up for you

keep us posted on ur success

they key is going for it, b/c w/the economy the way it is, most are sitting on the fence NOT going for it

Re: Starting an Affilliate on a Part-time basis

Mike,
My wife and I are actually beginning a part-time affiliate ourselves. I am a college strength coach, so I can only offer classes in the evenings and Saturday mornings. We'll see how it goes. I will know more in a couple months.

Hope things go well for you!

I'm planning to go the same route.

get a few clients, reinvest, make enough to affiliate, eventually get a box.. quit day job.

I'm also doing this. Day job will stay intact, Garage Box open until I get too busy then move to a full-size box. At that point I plan on bringing in another trainer or two.

Many affiliates start this way. Works well if you plan and administer well. Oh, yeah, and train people fantastically.

Re: Starting an Affilliate on a Part-time basis

I run our box this way and schedule the hours around my full time work schedule.

We are closed every Sunday. Mon. thru Wed. We run a class every hour on the hour starting at 8 and door gets rolled down at Noon.

Thursday and Friday (when I'm off from Police work) we run classes on the hour 8 - Noon, close down until 3 so I can clean, do billing etc... then run classes from 3 - 6.

I picked two of my earliest clients who "got it" as far as methodology was concerned and encouraged them to get their Level 1 and they help me out by getting the early classes for me. In return I pay 1/2 of any specialty Certs they want to attend.

We opened the doors for the first time on October 1st and have over thirty members. Not bad considering I only advertise to the law enforcement community.

You can do it.

Zach, great info and it's no secret almost common sense but your willingness to share... that's what makes this community great!

Mike,

That's exactly the way we started out and, almost three years later, still going strong and growing! Go for it. If you need any input, please email me anytime: steve@crossfitocmd.com
