Is it safe to start the back-squat from the down position (<- I'm sure that has a more official name), resting on the safety bars? My guess is that it might be OK as long as my form is consistent.

I ask only because I GTG pull-ups and now the back-squat each day. With the barbell in the regular racked position on my power-cage, it gets in the way of doing pull-ups - I can do pull-ups with the barbell on the safety bars.

I guess it would depend if you can get into the bottom with proper form and move from there.

yes, it is safe. it is definitely a lot harder. cut back on the weight you are using. tighten everything up before you stand up.

when you go from a standing position with the weight racked on your shoulders/back and then squat down your body is already tightened up to support the weight. when you start from the bottom position you have to consciously get the body ready to support the weight.

yeah, it's how you do jump squats. it seems that the hardest thing to do (besides staying tight from the start) would be to find the right foot position.

I'm pretty sure this is mentioned in Rippetoe's starting strength as one of those ways to really work a sticking point, if you have one.

It is a bit like doing a deadlift though, it's harder, and a bit different to start from a dead point, and then lift, rather than to exploit the hamstring stretch-rebound of a regular squat.
