It may sound strange but a grass-fed beef hamburger patty is pretty good. It's a small quantity of lean beef so it's not really like chowing down on a Big Mac at that hour.

Cottage cheese, if you don't mind dairy.

Canadian bacon with a bit of cheese.

A protein shake.

Wild smoked salmon.

Hemp protein, frozen berries, and your favorite oil(s) in a smoothie.

Canned kippered herring.

Garrett, I've never had "smoked salmon", is it like a deli meat in appearance? No cooking needed

No cooking needed. It comes as a pre-thinly-sliced fillet, usually in some kind of shrink-wrap.

Frank:

If you've never had smoked salmon, you are missing one of the great pleasures in the world. My wife is French and we have it for special occasions on white toast with butter and a touch of lemon, together with a glass of champagne. That's probably even in the Zone given the protein, fat and carb combination. In any case, try it. One caution - it ain't cheap so probably not one for daily consumption.

I'll be getting some today then :-) maybe with some scrambled eggs, or will I lessen its palatability?

Actually Frank, smoked salmon with scrambled eggs is a killer combo. Maybe a piece of fruit or a whole wheat tortilla and you've got a great breakfast.

With eggs it's great, too. If you can find it, they sometimes sell a package of off-cuts on the salmon which are perfect for eggs. What I mean is that normal smoked salmon comes in slices but when the processor cuts the slices, there are sometimes bits left. You get the same quality salmon but at a cheaper price. I think you'll find that Scottish smoked salmon is also more expensive.

You're making me hungry just thinking about it.
