My dad does not like any fruits. He can eat some however by putting sugar on them (such as berries with sugar). He is wondering if overall it is better for him to not eat the fruits at all or eat the fruits with added sugar.

Also how about canned peaches, pineapple, etc that are in syrup?

I would ditch the fruit if he can't eat them without adding sugar. Canned fruit usually contains added sugars and/or preservatives, stay away from this stuff.

sugar is glucose and fructose. Fruit is glucose and fructose. answer is pretty obvious

Eric- If he will eat veggies that is fine. Some yams and sweet potatoes (not sugar added!) might add a little variety.

So is the take home message: Sugar + Sugar=No Go?

I don't know about this one. There are many health benefits to eating fruit, do we ditch them because of some table sugar? I might get a variety of good quality fruit and have dad try them plain, then have him only add the smallest amount of sugar he can...slowly wean him off the sugar thing. If he's eating a basically Zone balanced meal, the small amount of sugar ain't going to kill him. Also, just a guess, but dad is not engaged in a quest for elite fitness, so do we hold him to our standards immediately?

Robb, based on Charlie's other responses, I've got a feeling he's saying that fruit and sugar are made of the same things, so there's no difference. Hopefully I'm wrong.

My question is if dad doesn't eat the fruit with sugar, what will he eat in it's place? If it's veggies, as Robb said, eat the veggies. If it's going to be rice or candy, eat the fruit even if it's with a touch of sugar.

Good point Larry...not everyone is seeking elite fitness. Some improvement is always better than no improvement.
