I had the same question when I started...
From the bottom chinup position (hanging from the bar with your hands), lift your feet until your toes touch the bar.

Don't forget to fully open the hips at the bottom.

yah..its not as simple as just grinding your toes up to the bar from a dead hang and dropping though.

there is a swing/kip rhythm of sorts involved for both toes to bar and knees to elbows

While that is true, and if you ever compete you will definitely want to learn the kip, strict ttb or k2e are just as valid.

Not if you want to do them like a gymnast as they should be started with the hips tucked under (pelvic tilt) so the body is hollow. While you will see glide swing kip to support in gymnastics where the hips arch and open, it's a deduction as it's not aesthetically appealing and looks cleaner when it's done from a hollow. It's also harder.
