most fit athlete

That top ten sports list prompted me to put this question on another board and I figure I'd pose it here. Who would you say is the most fit athlete ever out there? Like I said on the top ten sports list, mine is going to Michael Johnson, circa 96-99. Here is my reasoning why: 19.32 200m, 43.18 400m, 18minute off day 5k time, various accounts saying he could bench 225 all day long like it was his job.

Now for the assumptions about him I'm making: When he set the WR 200 he ran a 10.2 100 in the turn, so I'm assuming out of the blocks on the straight away he could have gone sub 10 secs flat. Based on the 225 for reps he would be benching over 300 pretty easily, so he has good strength. I've got to think with the sprint speed he has he could jump pretty darn well too, not to mention his flexibility evidenced anytime you would see him warming up.

Primarily though my case are his well rounded track times. I've got think if he trained for the 5k he could run substantially faster than that 18 minutes he would run on a rest day. I know the decathletes are very, very well rounded, I just think his 200m and 400m times are so outstanding that they deserve special consideration.

Roman Sebrle

End discussion.

Though any number of loose forwards (Schalk Burger, Richie McCaw, Xavier Rush, Juan Smith, etc) playing professional rugby could be considered as well.

Re: most fit athlete

Anyone who wins Ninja Warrior. Anyone who wins a Gold at the Decathalon. Lance Armstrong when he won the Tour seven times. Micheal Phelps in the water.

There isn't such a thing as most fit athlete across all sports and areas of fitness. Too much specialty is involved, and this subject gets asked about once a week.

I think there is a way to compare across sports.

And if you're tired of the subject, no one is putting a gun to your head and making you read the thread.

Re: most fit athlete

I would say a measure of aerobic fitness is they're vo2 max. Lances is right up there but the athletes with the highest are cross country skiers.
Obviously that's not all round fitness but if were saying fittest aerobically that's who it would be
