Re: 2014 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread

Dave Castro is trying to hard with his theatrics or the editing on the espn2 broadcast was off a bit --

Final event announcement:
"Ok, your last event is...Grace. 30 clean & jerk"
*silence*

"come on crowd let's hear for your final event"

*crowd starts to clap but then gets cut off...*

"ok ok, no, since this is the finals, it's double grace!"

*silence*

*horn*

He did the same thing with the previous 5 heats so the crowd new it as coming already and was tired of the schtick so they weren't cheering. They had the athletes sequestered so they didn't know what was coming and he wanted to surprise them like he had everyone else. The crowd can only play along for so long though.

Be very interesting to see how that develops. There are older and younger guys, but I would say Maddox is the genetic anomoly. He continues to be relatively competitive at least 10 years after everyone else. Makes you wonder what he could have done to the sport in his mid-20's
Didn't Matt Chan finish 2nd last year or the year before? I don't think it's as much how old they are or still being young enough to compete. I think it has much more to do with the time you have to put in to stay at the elite level.

Castro, when announcing Khalipa for his third place podium spot:

"Almost legendary status, close to... Jason Khalipa."

What kind of backhanded compliment bs is that?

On the Games website, it's the "Update Show" video. You have to jump through like 10 minutes of random shots before they get to the commentary/awards.

Its Castro, I am pretty sure that even Khalipa is not surprised. Guys has been to 7 games, won it once and finished podium 3 times and gets a "almost legend".

thanks! and of course he mentions something about him being in the navy. again.

*edit*
this closing ceremony is gold.

"Let's give it up for Bill [Henniger] and his crew for busting ***" (i get the message, just the phrasing could have been better)

"let's get some music on; i'd like some music on while we're doing this [closing ceremony]"
*katy perry Firework comes on*
"anything but that. anything but THAT song. anything else."

While HQ is officially distancing themselves from this injury, pointing out that this was not a CrossFit affiliate (the video of the injury, however, looks exactly like a CrossFit gym, coach, etc.), there are lessons to be learned.

He is exactly the type to get injured - determined to do 40 reps no matter what. He defines failure as falling off the bar. He prioritizes intensity above safety. How do manage such a client as a coach? You've got to tell him to get off the bar when he is approaching failure, because he won't do it for himself.

Later in the video it shows Brad doing some deadlifts and wallball throws, and his form is not great - still putting intensity over safety.

I hope coaches can spot people like this and talk them down from the cliff of intensity.
I had the privilege of doing a WOD at Greg Amundson's box that included toes to bar. He required us to hook grip the bar for safety.

He also advised us to use a alternating grip for the same reason that it's used for deadlifting and make it easier to jump and get both hands solidly wrapped around the bar. You have a hand on either side before the jump.

Both are quality safety measures that I wouldn't of thought of myself.

Mr. Morris are you familiar with these techniques ? I haven't visited many boxes so I don't know if it's common practice.

He also gave us instruction on proper technique for the kettlebell swing to minimize stress on the lower back.

Lastly he stopped me at certain point of the WOD noticing that my form was deteriorating to an unacceptable point, also something I didn't spot myself. .

Now back to our regularly scheduled Games programming...
