Even though I dont crossfit as Rx'd...

Even though I dont crossfit as rx'd most of the time, I come here to "associate with like minded individuals, who share the same fitness values as you"

So Ill share a story:
==
My new boss came up beside me and kinda tried to hip check me yesterday. I really didnt notice him come in because I was standing in the doorway of my office and deep in thought, working through a problem with one of my developers. I felt something, like a cool breeze on a summer day, or maybe a pesky mosquito flew by my ear, and he almost ended up on his butt on the floor...
He quickly recovered and gave me a (Little harder) testing shove on the shoulder, and just exclaimed.. "DUDE. Your like a freaking TANK. A solid, Immovable MASS of muscle." I was out my my trance by this point and didnt know what to say, except for "Ummm... Thanks??" The developer, whom I went to high school with (and is 6'9" and 210#) gave away my secret. "Maybe its because almost 2 years ago, he lost over 60 pounds of fat, and has since put half of it back on, but in pure muscle, but still runs almost every morning."
Later in the day, after we had solved the problem we were working on, I reflected on this incident. First of all, my new boss was joking and trying to horseplay with me, Which I was not expecting. Second he is about 5'9" and maybe 150#, not a big guy by any means. But he is right.. I have become much more solid, stronger, and more agile than the average software developer, even the average guy.
Moral of the story: I actually stand out among my peers as fit, muscular, and hardened.

Selfish, superficial goal achieved =)

lol, awesome. All this talk of pursuing performance here is a lot of BS much of the time if you ask me. I'd rather have reached your superficial goal then getting a Fran PR alone in my garage.

Interesting testimony.

Beyond the passing vanity of this is the reality that when you're in shape your superiors, peers, and subordinates view you differently.
This can be a big big professional advantage in unstable times.

Too true. I'm the Vice President of a structural steel fabricator and half of my motivation is to have all of my erectors having a healthy respect of me. I don't do the daily field work they do so I at least need to be bigger than them.

Re: Even though I dont crossfit as Rx'd...

These subtle, almost-subconscious relationship dynamics are so important in a male-dominated environment. I deal with heavy conflict every day (I'm a criminal defense and divorce lawyer) and being fit and in shape has absolutely changed the way people treat me. I feel a lot less aggressive behavior towards me now.

You would think that our society would evolve beyond those somewhat childish dynamics, but it hasn't. Even in a genteel and structured environment in which physical violence is all but inconceivable like a courthouse, a guy with big arms and a flat stomach (me now) gets treated way differently than the same guy with thin arms and a huge beer belly (the me of February 2010).

Evolution of modern man = 500,000+ years of ingrained behavior that even today is only irrelevant in a very small percentage of the worlds population. There is absolutely no evolutionary advantage, even today, to ignoring the physical attributes of other people.
