Exclamation Coaches working out during classes???

Hey all. Looking for advice in regards to allowing the coaches at my box to work out during the class times they are coaching. I know if I were to ask around to the members if they mind, many wouldn't have a problem, wouldn't say anything if they did, or wouldn't know any better anyways. Personally, I feel that when you are coaching, you are to be doing just that; coaching. To prevent injury, teach proper form and technique and watch who/what may need to be scaled throughout the workout, in my eyes is key. People are paying significant money for that coaching experience, to be told right from wrong as well as be pushed when the going gets tough. We are not an open gym that just supplies the equipment for people to come in and work out.

I know it seems as though my mind is made up in regards to coaching/working out at the same time; but I just wanted to know what other people allowed/did. If the class is full of veterans, and its an easier WOD, by all means, have at it..but even then, veterans need correcting too sometimes. When it comes to newbies, straight out of OnRamp/Elements/Fundamentals, or any other "new to crossfit" program you got going, I think its crucial to pay attention and dedicate yourself to those people during that class time.

Oof, any help would be great. I of course don't want to be unreasonable but at the same time, have the members safety and experience in mind wholeheartedly.

As a customer, I agree with you. Coaches should work out on their own time.

When coaching just focus on it. I don't mind other coaches attending a class on their freetime. Spot on coaching is what makes CrossFit so powerful, and it is impossible to provide that when focusing on 120kg deadlifts and HSPU's, as an example..

Anyone who thinks they can workout while coaching is neither getting a good workout nor doing a good job coaching.

I think you are describing a workout partner, not a coach. I'll pay for coaching, not for a workout partner.

I don't think you'll find too many that don't agree with what has already been said.

Training and coaching should be mutually exclusive in terms of a CrossFit class.

For sure, separate times, but I will say I love my coaches to workout in class with the members. Do what we do and be around to help the people around them if needed. Clients love working out with coaches and seeing that we do the programming we preach. But they absolutely do not coach and train at the same time.

Re: Coaches working out during classes???

The only time I work out with a class is when I am specifically asked by a class that only has 1 or 2 members in it PLUS it's a strength day and we are just rotating spotters and lifters. Otherwise - No.

Re: Coaches working out during classes???

As a client to my box I have seen the coaches coach during our scheduled WODs and then after everyone is done they do the WOD. Some of us stick around and encourage them when they are working out.
Night gathers, and now my watch begins.

As a coach of Alabama men's varsity rowing team, it's important that coaches know their boundaries. Coaches are there to teach, critique, motivate, and observe. That's all.
