Rotator Cuff Exercises?

Does anyone here incorporate isolated rotator cuff exercises into their regimen as a preventive measure against shoulder injury?

I'm gearing up for warmer weather and beach volleyball, and thought it might be a good idea to give my rotator cuff some attention. Your thoughts?

Re: Rotator Cuff Exercises?

I try to, at least when I remember, and before my lacrosse season. I do some of the stuff from Kelly Starrett's Mobility WOD's (lacrosse balls in the thoracic spine and above the scapula + overhead band stretching), and the Diesel Crew stuff is pretty good.

LYTPs are fine wfs

In reality though the shoulder is complex. Not all pain is going to be "rotator cuff." Where it hurts is not always WHY there is a problem either.

So I wouldn't get in the habit of going to RC exercises as prehab "for everything" because it won't work

Re: Rotator Cuff Exercises?

I use an assortment of scap/RC movements - including dumbbell external rotations, Powell raises, and trap 3 - and program them for all of my clients at least twice/week.

Re: Rotator Cuff Exercises?

I do some external rotation stuff about once every other week along with some work with the shoulder horn. Seems to help protect the shoulder from all the internal rotation of the tennis I play.

Sorry for the late reply:

Diesel Crew stuff:

The specific Kelly Starrett routine I was referring to is in the Crossfit Journal:

http://journal.crossfit.com/2010/07/kstarr-2min-3.tpl {WFS}

but he also maintains a Mobility WOD website that has lots of mobility stuff not just shoulders:

This

I have 3 or 4 shoulder routines that I rotate through regularly...EVERY Saturday I do a 10-exercise routine 3 sets of 8-12 reps depending on how I'm feeling.

Consisting of:

Inv Shrugs on rings
Support shrugs on p-bar
DB rotations -various
Scap work
DB flys
Cuban Press

One of the other routines is band work using some K-Star stuff and stuff I picked up from Ido Portal and Coach Sommer

The last is very similar to Diesel Crew stuff + some KB work, Windmill, Arm-bar stretch...etc.
