multi-vitamin daily necessary or overkill?

i take a multi-vitamin 2 or 3 times a week and not daily - the reason being that i eat healthy whole foods and get my minerals & nutrients from that. i'm hesitant to take a multi-vitamin daily as i don't want my body to become dependent on the multi-vitamins and become less efficient at absorbing nutrients & minerals from whole foods.
i take 4g of fish oil daily as i don't think my whole foods can provide the omega 3 EPA & DHA.
thoughts anyone?

Won't hurt you but probably not helping much either.

Re: multi-vitamin daily necessary or overkill?

Studies show individuals who take a multi-vitamin are in general healthier, live longer, and lead more fruitful lives.

They also tend to exercise more, make healthier food choices, be more affluent, and have less stressful jobs and family lives. Probably not necessary if you eat well, but might not hurt.

Eat healthy and varying diet, exercise, and supplement only the things that are actually lacking in your diet...

Do I Really Need A Multivitamin? And Can They Harm Me?

Quote:
No, you don't need to take a multivitamin. There are plenty of people who enjoy long, healthy lives without multivitamins, and it is both possible and preferable to get everything the body needs from food sources. Now that we have that out of the way, I would like to review all of the reasons why it is a very good idea to take a multivitamin, and provide some insight into the supposed risks of taking one.[Read more...]

If it contains a lot of iron, for example, it just might hurt you.

Take vitamin D, vitamin E and some magnesium and you're golden. - If you want to know why these, check out resources like www.************* (wfs) and Protein Power by M. R. Eades and M. D. Eades.

Edit: That website is supposed to be Robb Wolf dot com.

I remember Mat Lalonde posting a a study on Robb Wolf's blog basically showing mutli-vitamins were useless if not harmful.

If any multi-vitamin decides to go the mega amount route they could be bad for you (water soluble vitamins like C being an exception). If going for the average One-A-Day brand probably no worries.

But best to be eating real food first.

Side topic, I wonder if there are any current studies of the nutritional profile of fruits and vegetables. I'm betting the typical produce from the supermarket has no where near the same amount of nutrients they did 50 years ago.

I've seen charts with those numbers but can't remember where--one of Pollan or Marion Nestle's books maybe?

I've seen some reports stating the nutritional value has dropped, but seeing a chart spelling things out would be great.
