Sandbags

I have been mimicking Crossfit for about 4 Months, with the exception of using Sandbags in Place of barbells.

I have the goal to get stronger! A lot stronger, I take the form of an endurance athlete (Run, and Swim). Since I want to get Stronger, should I go out of my way to get barbell training or can I stick to sandbags.

My sandbags are adjustable (weights from 50# to 200#), and barbells would be hard to get at.

Thank You

Re: Sandbags

You can build strength with sandbags - you may want to check out CrossFit Center City's website. They do a lot of work with sandbags. Their website is www.crossfitcc.blogspot.com (wfs)

Re: Sandbags

Until you can clean and jerk a 200# sandbag, you can get stronger with just sandbags. On the other hand, your max squat and deadlift should exceed 200# fairly soon, so you'll need something else if you want to move truly massive amounts of weight.

Re: Sandbags

Alright, I'll stick with sandbags as long as I can. Then I'll make some bigger ones or get barbells.

Re: Sandbags

I workout at Crossfit Center City (see above for the link.) When I started 4/16/09, we only had 1 barbell, so we used sandbags for EVERYTHING. Now, even though we have a bunch of barbells, our trainers make us use sandbags for a TON of workouts...and let me tell you...it's never fun to come in and find out that we're doing "Sandy Fran." Sandbags make everything harder....it's not balanced weight, it's hard to grip, the weight shifts as you lift it, etc. You'll go far without ever picking up a barbell. That being said, it sure is fun to learn the lifts with barbells
