Setting up an affiliate without space

Hi everyone, fairly new to the message board, but I have been CrossFitting since January.

I am soon to go for my Level 1 Cert, and my AWF weightlifting coaching course. I also have a Bachelor in Human Movement Science.

I am off for 6 months full time training with the Army Reserve (australia) but plan to use the money to buy equipment and affiliate.

The only problem is that living at home means I am limited with space, and the only options I have, is to free up as much garage space as I can, which will allow me to train 2 people at a time with all equipment. Or go to a course along the river which has chin up bars etc, and take limited equipment such as med balls and KB's.

Please offer any advice that can help me here.

Re: Setting up an affiliate without space

Mark--
Congratulations on your certs!
I started my affiliate being subcontracted to a small private gym in about an 8' X 8' area. Later I moved into a bigger, but still very small space of about only 500 sq ft (but it had a huge parking lot behind it).
Next month (GOD willing) we move into about 3000 sq ft space.
Just start where can with whatever you've got.
We been affiliated since 2005.

Re: Setting up an affiliate without space

We also started with no space and spent our first year outdoors in a local park. While hauling around equipment was a pain, one of the positives was that we had some pretty good visibility.

Like Frank says, work with what you have - just focus on being the best trainer you can be no matter where you end up. If you do start outdoors, make sure you clearly communicate your inclement weather policy - it turns out that people's definition of 'rain' can vary widely.

Re: Setting up an affiliate without space

We've been operating in a Rec Center gymnasium for the past three months and it's going great! We had many outdoor classes until the weather started getting cold, and people loved the workouts. There have been a few people who are holding out until we move into a permanent space, but pretty much anyone we get to try the free intro workout signs up once they see the difference between our offerings and everything else out there in the neighborhood. All you need is the basic equipment, coaching skills, and an open space anywhere and you can do it!
