Im going to begin a home gym.
Im not really sure what to have, ive looked around and googled but might be leaving stuff out.
I also have the disadvantage of being a college student so dont have that much money (400 or so $ to spend)

basketball filled with sand
kettle ball
pull up bar
pulling tire
big tire (where would i find one? junk yard?)
35 and 40 dumbells
jump box (could someone leave me a link how to make one, or another substitute)
need a substitute for concept rower (areodyne bike?) (rather than doing sdhp)
olympic size bar
probably 10's, 25's, and 45's plates

Okay, i need to know if there is any cheap bumpers, i want them so bad, but really expensive. Looking on ebay.

So...add to the list, give me ideas and suggestions, dont care how ghetto it is, i just want all the essentials

Re: Ideas?

Definitely check Craigslist and E-bay often for used equipment, as well as garage sales. Also making your own stuff is awesome and satisfying as well.

Kettlebells and bumper plates apparently will never be found at reasonable prices (same with Concept 2, Versaclimber and Airdyne). You may try to make a ghetto set of bumper tires to sub for bumper plates. Simply find 2 decent tires still on the rim, (preferrably small diameter, like for a trailer), get a couple used 10 pound plates, line the plate up and drill holes and bolt the plate to the tire through the holes. Then load your bar through the plate. I have pics of some I made with old Crown Vic tires, could post those if you want.

Big tires - go to or call your local tire shops (Goodyear, Firestone, Les Schwab) they should have or be able to tell you where to get old used tires to flip, jump on/into, and hit with sledge hammers. Should be free, bring a couple friends and a heavy duty truck though.

Also look into horse stall mats for flooring, 3/4 inch thickness. One of my best buys for my garage. Once you start you will be surprised at how your gym will grow.

Re: Ideas?

Welcome to cf, but this has honestly been discussed a million times. Read the faq and search. A rower is def not a high priority item IMO, just run instead. I sub pullups in FGB.

Re: Ideas?

This Crossfit Radio episode is worth listening to as well. Interview with the owner of Rogue Fitness and they talk about some tips on equipping a gym. (WFS)

Also I think Crossfit Journal issue #1 has some info too.

Re: Ideas?

For 95% of CF WODs, all you need is a Pull-up bar, a good barbell and bumpers.
