Leaning on straps on rings

I just came to the unfortunate realization that I've been leaning on the straps during ring push-ups and dips. So I have 3 questions:

1. How much have I been cheating myself?
2. Do many of you lean on the straps?
3. How do I stop leaning on the straps? Sometimes it just seems phyicially impossible to avoid the straps--not just from a strength point of view--but also because they are so close to my arms.

1. Cheating? Well, it does rob at least one plane of stabilization if that's what you're asking. It's not THAT significantly harder after you get used to it... but you won't be used to it the first many times you do it.

2. Sure. Depends on what you're aiming for though. If you want to make yourself really strong I would start working stuff where you don't lean on them... as for metcons I lean as much as I want during them (30 MUs for example).

3. Turn the rings out... aka make it so that your palms point forwards (thumbs to the outside).
