OK, this is totally random, and not really fitness related. Plus it's the kind of thing I wouldn't normally ask, but I'm so impressed by the overall intelligence level on this board, that I figure somebody might actually know the answer. This is the kind of thought that occurs to me in the middle of the night...

You know when you walk into a room where people have been sleeping all night, it has that "sleep" smell to it? What exactly causes that smell?

Here is my guess. Maybe the smell is the person's breath CO2 and what not. The air in the room is probably pretty still all night so it doesn't go away. Maybe it is just "clean" air that hasn't had the chance to mix with other smells in the air? Like the way it smells after a rain storm. Just a guess.

CO2 is odourless so the smell is probably a combination of sweat, odours from food, flatulence etc

As Joeph says there is likely to be little airflow if the door is shut and so the concentration of odours builds up.

It's diluted bad breath, mixed with the occasional 'whatnot'.

Has anyone ever been on a submarine? Those PDB's (poordumbbastards) are stuck with the same air, breathing recycled, unpleasant human 'whatnot' exhaust 24/7 for 60 days at a patrol on the boomers, sometimes longer on the fast attacks. Eau de submarine gets into the clothes and, much like skunk, the only thing you can do with them is incineration or burial.

Tim, that sleep smell is perfume compared to the Underseas Sewer Tube boof.

I used to work in a fat factory and the smell was the same sort of thing.

This all pervasive rancid fat smell that condensed on your clothes, hair and skin and left you feeling like you'd taken a bath in cooking oil.

It's also the sweat & oils that get into your bedclothes and stuff. And a lot of what we smell is the result of bacteria acting on our sweat, breath, etc.

Don, when a CF'er says they used to work in a "fat factory", I have to wonder if they mean Bally's.

I'm one of those PDB's that Climer is talking about. The smell is actually pretty mild except in the larger berthing areas. Most college dorm rooms I've walked into smell significantly worse. There is a smell that gets in your clothes but thats from chemicals we use in the air recycling system. And I know you didn't mean anything by it but, for the record, more than half of the subs crew has an above average intellegence (we operate a nuclear reactor). Just my $0.02

But Travis, doesn't that mean almost half the crew is below average??
