Clean/Jerk Help?

Hey guys,

This is a video from todays training session.

It didn't go ridiculously well, but I was hoping to get some feedback if possible on how to better my lifts.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1beC26A4FUM (WFS)

Thanks!

Re: Clean/Jerk Help?

For the love of god, stop looking down on your cleans. Look straight ahead the entire time. These aren't deadlifts where you want a neutral spine. Balance, position, and speed/directional changes are important. You won't know where "level" is if you're looking down. Keeping a level vision should fix the other issues in your clean. It should help with the weight being forward on your toes off the ground and should improve your extension.

Try it and see where it goes.

Re: Clean/Jerk Help?

That head thing was the big common denominator I saw on all your misses.

You kind of jerk around a lot in general on the setup. Remember, the foundation of the entire lift is in the setup, so get yourself solid before you even think of moving the weight.

First of all, sweet set-up! Is that your basement? Great use of space!

These cleans are really not bad...It looks to me like you are jumping forward (based on the video). Jumping forward is usually a symptom of throwing the bar out in front of your body even just a little instead of keeping it close. To combat this simply create a line on the ground with tape or chalk and stay behind it when you clean.

I would work on a lot of front squats. Do you have a squat rack? You could use some work in the bottom of a heavy squat and you should be front squatting more than you clean. Really though, on a regular basis, you do not need to go heavy on the front squats to make a difference. Just get the best squat you've ever seen and repeat it for technique and reps with moderate weight.

Hope this helps! Keep us updated on your progress!

Re: Clean/Jerk Help?

You can totally tell that you prepare to bail every lift, otherwise you wouldn't be so good at landing on your carpet pads every miss.

Relax more on the start, head up. Elbows down at the rack position.

What do you mean by this bit? Just curious since I usually see/hear the opposite. Unless you mean when preparing for the jerk?

Re: Clean/Jerk Help?

Woah, tons of replies. Thanks a lot for the help. To answer a few things.

Yes I've got a squat rack. My FS PR is 260.

I'm going to make myself look dead straight ahead on cleans. I took a look at the video and it really looked like it made a difference.

My elbows I've never been sure of for my jerk. When I drop them. the weight is always on my chest.
