Fran question

OK.
I'm hoping no one laughs at this one, but I have to ask.

Sunday 111120's WOD was the 'Heavy Fran':
Three rounds, 15-12-and 9 reps, for time of:
135 pound barbell Thrusters
45 pound weighted Pull-ups

Now, I know 'Fran' is:
21-15-9
Thruster @ 95lb
Pull ups

The way I interpret 'Fran' is:
21 thrusters then 21 pullups
15 thrusters then 15 pullups
9 thrusters then 9 pullups
completion of WOD

So the 'Heavy Fran' should be the same concept:
15 thrusters then 15 pullups
12 thrusters then 12 pullups
9 thrusters then 9 pullups.
Completion of WOD. just 135 lb thruster and 45 lb pull ups?
Correct?

My training partner convinced me today that the 'Heavy Fran' was the following:
Rnd 1:
15 thrusters (135lb) then 15 pullups (45lb)
12 thrusters then 12 pullups
9 thrusters then 9 pullups

Rnd 2:
15 thrusters (135lb) then 15 pullups (45lb)
12 thrusters then 12 pullups
9 thrusters then 9 pullups

Rnd 3:
15 thrusters (135lb) then 15 pullups (45lb)
12 thrusters then 12 pullups
9 thrusters then 9 pullups

So that's what we did. I went back to view the demo video on this WOD and it was demonstrated the way I thought.
The wording on crossfit.com can be confusing if you read it literally as 3 rounds though.
I want to know what is correct.
My training partner has been doing crossfit about a year or so, and I'm a newbie doing it for just over a month. He says that everyone's 'Fran' time is just the first round of the three rounds?!

Could someone shed some light on this?

Keep in mind we don't train at a box, we train at a local gym. We're on our own.

Thanks for any help or advice.

(Did I get roped into a torturous workout? LOL)

Re: Fran question

He obviously doesn't know what hes talking about you should never take advice from him again. You only complete it one time. I would come to this forum before you get advice from him anymore. Doing "Heavy Fran" once just sucks but three times?! Thats just unsafe

This is one of the few occasions in which an interweb forum trumps friendship.

Appreciate your info. Yes, I agree safety was a concern there.

Re: Fran question

If it's any consolation, I understand your confusion. In one of the early journal articles, they talked about Fran being 3 rounds, 21-15-9. I just about flipped out when I read that. How could anyone possibly do that, and in the times posted? All the times that I had seen it posted on the mainsite had it just as '21-15-9 for time'.

I think what they had meant to say in that journal article, or at any other time when it was listed on the mainsite, was that the workout was three rounds of thrusters and pull ups, where the first 'round' is 21 reps of each, the second 'round' is 15 reps each, and the last 'round' is 9 reps each. Very confusing way of communicating it, I agree.

Here is something to think about in regards to your friend though: if he's been doing CF for a whole year and didn't know that Fran was just 21-15-9 for time, chances are he hasn't seen many of the instructional videos, nor has he gone to a certification seminar. That worries me, since most people that I know of who get in to CF spend many hours combing the videos of CF athletes doing crazy things. One of those that people usually watch is a really fast Fran. If he hasn't seen that, that's a red flag in regards to his understanding of CF.

Just a thought.

Adam,
I appreciate you taking the time for your explanation, you were spot on. I guess I went under the assumption he 'knew' more since he has more exposure.. but in the end my gut knew I was right.

Thanks again.
