Stuart McGill talks crunches, reverse hypers, and sled drags

An good interview with Stuart McGill Ph.D about everything from crunches to sled drags and the Reverse Hyper and Louie Simmons (about minute 40 on for sleds, RHs and Louie.)

http://www.myrehabexercise.com/blog/archives/669 (website safe)

If you don't know who Stuart McGill is, he's one of the leading experts in analyzing back pain and disc problems.

Enjoy,

Dr. J

On a loosely related topic, this was an interesting read claiming a lot of the research on spinal flexion, degenerative disc disease and flexion cycles is flawed - http://bretcontreras.com/2011/08/fre...-review-paper/

Thanks for that article. I don't think McGill is saying that all flexion is bad. In the interview he differentiates that flexion is bad for flexion intolerant people and the differences in spinal movement between different athlete body types.

Keep in mind they discuss the GHR as if that is the Reverse Hyper. They are not the same. I believe McGill in the end is talking about the GHR, not the reverse hyper which Louie felt was essential in his back rehab.

The guy interviewing McGill was the one who used the wrong vocab. But, McGill specifically mentions that Louie used the machine to rehab his back but he doesn't believe in Louie's reasoning behind the reverse hyper and that it is not for everyone.

Re: Stuart McGill talks crunches, reverse hypers, and sled drags

Actually, to correct, Louie doesn't make the specific claim that Dr. McGilll is referring to. Others have made that claim as a way to explain the effectiveness of the device.

Dr. McGill also talks about using the device differently for different people and he certainly did not say it has no validity, he said, very sensibly, that it is not for all forms of spinal etc. pathology. Nothing works for everything, but as Louie has shown and experienced over the years, the device can do wonders for many with back concerns.
