Re: GSP vs BJ Penn? Comments?

Right after the fight with GSP, there was an interview with BJ on the local news here. He was making comments like he wanted to make the GSP fight his last fight if he won. And how he goes back and forth on retiring... And all I could think about is BJ sounds like he is scared he is going to lose to Kenny Florian, so instead of defending the LW title, he is talking retirement with the belt... I'll see if I can find the interview.

I agree with both Jeff's assesment of BJs' title defense against Florian. I've been calling that one two. Kenny is probably the worst match up for BJ at LW, and now he has a blueprint on how to beat him soundly. I actually think that Kenny will finish BJ and shock the world...

I also think Kenny is going to finish him... And the guys I train with out here think I am crazy. They also get pretty upset whenever someone is rooting against their beloved BJ

Re: GSP vs BJ Penn? Comments?

Regarding weigh-ins right before the fight, my question is this, what if a fighter is over the weight limit? Postponing the fight or disqualification is not a realistic option. With the weigh-in a day or two before the fight an overweight fighter has a chance to shed those last pounds. Actually, I don't know the protocol for someone not making weight, perhaps someone can enlighten me as to what happens?

Hi Robert. Not making weight is a bigger problem under the current system because guys try to cut large amounts of weight so there is a bigger risk of them not making weight. If a fighter fails to make weight (there is a 1 lb cushion that's allowed in non-title fights only) the opponent can decide if they still want to take the fight or not. IF a fighter fails to make weight in a title fight (no 1 lb cushion), the 5 round title fight instantly becomes a 3 round non-title fight, regardless of whether the fighters want it to or not. This has actually happened a couple times in the UFC. When Anderson Silva was scheduled to fight Travis Lutter, Lutter failed to make weight and weighed in at 177 lbs. Then after a couple hours he tried again to make weight (is this really a safer system?) and, if I remember right he weighed 176.5 lbs. So the fight was turned into a 3 round non-title fight. This fact is both ironic and stupid because, come fight time, Anderson Silva weighed more than Lutter did.

As far as non-title fights I know this has happened several times but the only specific one that comes to mind is Thiago Alves vs Matt Hughes. Thiago failed to make weight for that fight. They fought anyway and Thiago had a deduction from his purse for not making weight.

Re: GSP vs BJ Penn? Comments?

On top of it no longer being a title fight, the fighter who failed to make weight has to give a portion of his purse, win lose or draw, to the fighter who made weight.
