Breathing and the Concept 2

I have always wondered and never found a straight answer...

When rowing, what is proper breathing technique? I have always inhaled on the relaxation phase and exhaled on the stroke. Is this correct, or are there alternatives?

Re: Breathing and the Concept 2

There is probably a discussion on the C2 website, but the short answer is "Yes," you are doing it right, if, by "relaxation phase," you mean what is usually referred to as the "recovery." On longer rows at hard effort, you may actually take (and need) two breaths per stroke (both on the recovery).

If you think about the motion - the catch & pull is basically a deadlift and to deliver the most power you pressurize by holding your breath while pulling hard, then the let your breath out afterwards.

But to be honest in all rowing I never really thought about *when* I breathed - I just pulled hard and your body seems to do the right thing

Re: Breathing and the Concept 2

I breathe in on the pull and out on the return.

My body is naturally squeezing the air out of me and I don't have to fight that pressure inhaling.
