Knee Replacement Journey

Hi-
I am a 54 year old woman who has been Crossfitting for over 2 years. I have decided to have my knee replaced so I can continue to do what I love, which is Crossfit. I thought I would start this thread so I can give updates on what the surgery is like, the P.T.,etc.. Basically try to explain what it is like when trying to get back in to shape and more importantly, back in to Crossfit shape. The surgery is February 8th so I will start recording my experiences then. Hopefully, it will be mostly positive and encouraging to anyone thinking of going down this road

Karen

Re: Knee Replacement Journey

Hi Karen, I’m in the same situation, 54, strength training since I was 17 and been at Crossfit since 2006.
ACL/Meniscus tear 1978, repaired and rehabbed, joined the Army in 1980, continued strength training and Army Physical fitness training.
Knee debridement 1993, loose body’s and spurs cleaned up, rehab went well, still strength training and Army Physical fitness training.
DJD of the medial compartment in 1997, medication and a brace still strength training (modified) and Army Physical fitness training.
Retired from the Army in 2000, in 2004 diagnosed with DJD of the knee, more meds and a brace continued modified strength training, stationary bike and heavy bag work and running (required for my job)
2006 discover Crossfit; replaced running with stationary bike and heavy bag work. Still wearing a brace and taking meds. After a few years I can do 90% of the WOD’s as RX’d except for the running. My job still requires a yearly Physical fitness assessment; vertical leap, push-ups, sit-ups and a 1.5 mile run. Didn’t train for it just did Crossfit and passed the test (Physical fitness assessment, rescinded in 2008)
2010 to 2012; two or three visits to my Doctor with pain, swollen knee or both, and of course I’m too young for a knee replacement.
Ortho visit JAN 27th 2012 “Pete you’re a prime candidate for a total knee” we will have to do, more x-rays, MRI etc.
The journey begins, good luck on your surgery and rehab,
look forward to your updates

Re: Knee Replacement Journey

Hi,
Thanks Pete

If anyone is interested there are a couple of forums that discuss knee replacements and all that goes along with them:

Re: Knee Replacement Journey

Well Guys I had my Knee replaced a week ago today. There have been many downs and a few ups but one of the most positives is my lack off serious pain, my quicker than normal range of motion progress, and my ability to walk without crutch support already (although I am told to keep them for a safety net for now) I attribute this to Crossfitting right up to the day before the surgery, trying to keep strong. THIS STUFF WORKS! I realize there is a long road ahead but Crossfit had definitely made the journey a lot easier. A shout out to Dave Tallman for all his help and encouragement.
Thank you!!!

More posts to come as I feel better

Re: Knee Replacement Journey

Well, it is 2 weeks out and I am still in that stage where whether I'd do it again or not is kind of iffy
The PT is going well and the swelling is manageable, but painful, as expected. What amazes me the most is how tired I get. I think I've taken more naps in the last 2 weeks that I have in my whole life. WOW!
So, this is my attempt at a more positive update, life is getting a bit better.

Re: Knee Replacement Journey

this is a new website run by two elete masters athletes (and Bud is an ex Olympian in track & field as well)

the site is just starting and as you can read they are looking at what needs to be done to make a artificial knee that an athlete (world class vaulter and jumpers) can use, rather than an average schmo..

if you feel you have some relevant info after your TKR journey commences they would like to hear it ..

http://www.superknee.com/

and good luck with the TKR
