Chronic sternum injury - Costochondritis?

I think I have this: http://www.webmd.com/pain-management/costochondritis.

About a year ago I was doing wide grip dips while waiting in line for a roller coaster. Cue acute pain in my sternum, increasing to severe pain within the hour, and subsiding to chronic pain over the next week. Issue has been about constant for about 10 months now although I have seen slight improvement. I cannot do dips (extreme pain), pushups (pain), barbell bench. Overhead lifts, pullups, wrestling, weird random positions cause pain with varying frequency. Breathing used to aggravate, but rarely does anymore.

I saw a doctor a few months after and he suggested rest which is all well and good until you waste away and get depressed because you hardly exercise blah blah blah.

Any ideas or should I give it another year to fully resolve itself? I've realised that not working out regularly ruins my outlook on life so resting (or at least not xfitting/o-lifting/power lifting at all) is out of the question.

Re: Chronic sternum injury - Costochondritis?

It shouldn't take a year. If you stop aggravating it then it should heal fairly quickly (depending on how bad it actually was). However, it's chronic now since it's been a year so it may take longer than usual.

Rest, ice, massage. Don't use it or aggravate it any and let it heal.

Work on other things like flexibility or other weaknesses.
