All these complaints - YOU create the CF Open

So, let's see here, going from memory, here are the cries I remember.

11.1/14.1
10m AMRAP
30 Double-unders
15 Power snatches
Quote:
"WAA, I don't have double-unders, what about me!?"
11.2
15m AMRAP
9 Deadlifts
12 Push-ups
15 Box jumps

Quote:
"WAA, that's so many box jumps, my achilles"
(it should be noted this year, step-ups were not allowed.)

11.3
5m AMRAP
Squat clean (heavy-ish)
Jerk (heavy-ish)

Quote:
"WAA, it's too heavy, I can't do it"
11.4-11.6, not TOO much complaining, but it was there "I don't have muscle-ups, etc"

12.1
7m AMRAP
Burpees

Quote:
"I don't like burpees, how unoriginal, where's the stuff I want, a ton of people did this WOD and didn't follow through all 5 weeks so my score is all messed up because they didn't more burpees than me. Favors the specialist, etc"
(on a fun note, anyone remember that russian dude that did a crazy amount of burpees!)

12.4/13.3
12m AMRAP
150 Wall balls
90 Double-unders
30 Muscle-ups

Quote:
"waa, that's too many wall-balls, I suck at double-unders, I don't have muscle-ups, how unoriginal considering we already did this one"
I think at this point you see where I'm going, but just to drive the point home.

14.1 - see above
14.2 - Rips/not enough time/I don't have C2B pullups/the 10 club
14.3 - OMG Deadlifts will break your spine/horrible programming/gyms opting not to do it at all
14.4 - I'm a garage gym-er and don't have a rower/how can I film all that stuff/180 club

EVERY WEEK someone is complaining about something. I'm no regionals level competitor, I never will be. I have the ability to do all this in my garage gym, and have been able to for the past few years. When I couldn't, I'd go to a local affiliate.

Realizing there is no way to win with people, how would YOU program 5 weeks of WODs that will test everything and not cause people to ***** moan and gripe. I'd love to hear others ideas. By no means is the programming perfect, but for what it's trying to accomplish, I think it's doing a damn good job.

Re: All these complaints - YOU create the CF Open

I just wanted to give you a hard time.

Really things don't get better without criticism both good and bad. My major complaint is that the Open was billed as for everyone. Therefore I feel that the workouts should be designed for everyone to be able to post a score of at least 1 rep.

Re: All these complaints - YOU create the CF Open

I am by no means a badass Crossfitter. I train pretty hard, have an athletic background, decent strength and gymnsatics. I have been consistently training for 5 years and each year I was able to post a fairly respectable score on each event. Beyond that I am one of the idiots who has actually sustained an injury during the Open. In 2012 I partially separated my shoulder during the snatch ladder. I can/have done all of these in my home gym if needed but also gone to an affiliate and done them there as well.

The idea is to cast a big net and catch the big fish. My wife was part of the 10 club and will now be part of the 60 club as she cannot yet do a pull up or T2B.

She has been training steady for about a year, I give her a pile of credit as she doesn't have an athletic background so at 35+ it takes her a lot longer to acquire skills. She practiced DUs steady about 4 times/week leading into the Open and guess what ? She did OK on 14.1. She asked me what she has to do to get pull ups etc, my response.......keep practicing.

Best of luck to everyone, the only thing so far this year that has been different is rowing every other movement has been a repeat of stuff done the previous 3 times. Why are people still surprised ?

I love the look at 14.4, somethig a little longer, not too heavy, some BW stuff and movements I have practiced a bunch, oddly I have gotten better at them after YEARS of practice.

If you don't want to compete at Crossfit, then save the $20 and don't sign up. Pretty simple. I have no complaints about any of the events, this years has seen wild swings in the standings too (minus right at the top) which is pretty cool.

Personally I liked last year's programing better, and thought it was set up to better challenge everyone. This year, all my weaknesses (not fitness) are getting exposed (except for 14.3). In 14.4 the T2B kicked my butt, as I am horribly inefficient. I actually felt really good on the wall balls and cleans. Heck if wall balls and cleans were in the 50 and 40 spots (T2B in the 30 spot), I probably would have gotten a few muscle ups. Oh well, at least I know that I need to seriously work on my DUs, OHS and T2B. The only frustrating part is that I am doing worse this year than last, even though I am MUCH fitter.

Being a garage gymmer on a limited budget, what is wrong with that complaint?

That's a tough comparison to make David. Participation in the games has jumped significantly every year.

2011: 26,000
2012: 69,000
2013: 138,000
2014: ~200,000 (This one is from memory)

Re: All these complaints - YOU create the CF Open

i am having a giggle with this thread.
as a 60+ female crossfit person without an athletic background it has all been a challenge for me.. and what a challenge it is and continues to be.

Double unders continue to be a challenge but the skip skip DU method got me thru 99 reps !

the box jumps and deadlifts: horrible but learned that tactics are important..dont waste energy carefully lowering the bar,,drop the damned thing from the stand.

14.4.. scored 60 and really torn up bleeding hands thanks to around 10+ mins of attempting to find my toes to bar ( can usually manage 1 at a time but not yesterday).. cool next year will be the year!!!! ( in a very small voice I will admit that i had a little bit of a cry of disappointment over my vanished T2B)

who knows what 14.5 will bring but I will be there at my box doing my level best .

started CF to get fit and strong and the open is a big bonus... and a really challenging learning experience! long may it last in a format that is reachable for the vast majority of us around the planet..

Helen
