Forward Roll on Rings

Weird question (probably for Steven...)

I can do this without trouble, but have a hell of a time understanding what exactly needs to be strong to make it happen. I'm working w/someone now who can do it one once-in-a-while, but can't make it happen consistently. Asides from hand-spotting, are there any specific accessory exercises to help? If I understand correctly, it's closest to a reverse hyper, but the fulcrum is at the shoulders instead of farther down?

It good timing you are asking this. I am shooting a short video on Forward rolls with some drills and progressions this next week.

Re: Forward Roll on Rings

When he fails, his hips start to go up, but never make it over his shoulders and he just drops back down again. I'm not completely clear on whether it's a strength or a coordination problem, though I lean towards the latter.

Re: Forward Roll on Rings

You can learn how to pull your hips over your shoulder by performing reverse leg lifts... Maybe that will help?

Re: Forward Roll on Rings

Leslie, how competent is he with ring dips? I noticed press to shoulderstand was not happening with me last night and my ring dip ability is pretty lame right now.

Re: Forward Roll on Rings

Hey Blair,

He's reasonably competent: can do 5 or so very strict (slow, arms off straps, turn out at top) dips. Doesn't have the best sense of his body in space, which makes me wonder if it's more a coordination/kinesthetics thing. I have to admit that I have a lot of trouble visualizing exactly what's doing the work in this move, and how to address problems!

Re: Forward Roll on Rings

Did you try to the reverse leg lifts? Very similar movement pattern IMO.

Re: Forward Roll on Rings

If someone can do a muscle up, they can do this skill

The hardest part to learn which makes it happen is how to allow your wrists to slide into false grip as you roll forwards.

From there since you will often be in a tuck or pike position, the falling of hte legs actually help drive up you through the transition so if you do it correctly the backside should actually be EASIER than a muscle up.
