HEy guys,

I don't have access to a track. Is running 400 metres on the treadmill a fair substitute?

Hey Nick,
If I where you I would use an odometer on a car and measure out .25 miles on a road. Or run half the distance so you can come back. I noticed that I feel more worked when I have the open road or track to run in front of me than I would on a treadmill. There seems to be more pushing of the ground with your legs than on a treadmill.

The intensity of the 400m sprints will be greater on the open road than on a treadmill and much more effective. Besides the slight assistance provided by the treadmill, it's not as dynamic. You'll potentially waste some effort adjusting the speed instead of focusing on the run.

Another suggestion would be to use a program like "Streets 98" to measure out that distance between identifiable landmarks in your neighborhood.
