Why do we ice something that is sore?

Icing is done to reduce inflammation, right? Isn't the increased blood flood to an injured area during inflammation a good thing that aids in the healing? Clearly, this is a topic I know nothing about. Why do we ice injuries?

Ice initially to get the fluids out of there that cause the swelling, then the blood can flow in for healing. That's why you'll get the ice-first, warm later recommendations.

Re: Why do we ice something that is sore?

Basic guidelines for Cold-Hot therapy:

Cold...
-Immediately following an acute injury (prevents swelling)
-After a workout to treat a nagging chronic injury to prevent swelling

Heat...
-Before exercise to an injury that shows no signs of swelling. This increases elasticity and blood flow.

Cold constricts blood vessels and prevents internal bleeding and the damage that swelling can do to surrounding tissues. Once swelling is under control, THEN blood flow to the area is good and helps in the healing process which is why we use heat, which dilates blood vessels.
