I'd mentioned to someone I work with that I was using a lot of soy protein as a supplement to get extra blocks and he said to be careful with soy, as it contains a compound similar to estrogen that could result in .. um. .unwanted side effects in men. I'd read some 1/2-arsed tear down of soy about a year ago that seemed to have no sound basis in fact, didn't really cite any solid studies of substantial samples and all in all, sounded as though it might have been sponsored by the american beef council. Some of what he was saying sounded like it might have come from similar studies, but in the brief googling I did, I found a lot of studies encouraging soy consumption by women. Does anyone know if there's any substance to any of this?

Studies galore.

Egg protein isolate is about as cheap, BTW.

It is a very dicey thing Chris. It is the phytoestrogen in the soy that stunts your testosterone production. That is not a very desireable outcome for any guy! Srprisingly, it is also dicey for women too because it messes with their estrogen output.

Stick w/ good quality protein in fish, chicken and the egg protein isolate like Ross suggested. Soy is quick, but the quality and side-effects aren't worth it in my opinion.

There have been numerous soy threads in the past few months on here.

Here's one I found off a search for "soy":
