Crossfit Documentary

I noticed that in the latest OPT interview they mentioned the shooting of a crossfit documentary. I have to admit I am really saddened by this, not that they are making a documentary, just that I wish I was the one making it. In the past five months I have been thinking about making a crossfit documentary. Nothing immediate obviously, I'm only a junior in film school, but I was hopping to do something down the road when I was skilled enough as a filmmaker. It has kind of been my secret project and I was hoping to send my idea to Coach Glassman when it was fully developed, but it looks like that is not going to happen.

Re: Crossfit Documentary

You could always make a Mockumentary. Something in the vein of "This is Spinal Tap", "Best in Show", a "Mighty Wind"?

Re: Crossfit Documentary

I don't think any of us are going to complain about the chance to see two different perspectives. I say go for it.

Re: Crossfit Documentary

Go for it. The other may involve mostly hotel-room panty-flinging, boobs, and fart jokes, thus rendering yours the de-facto serious documentary.

Re: Crossfit Documentary

I've only taken one film course on documentary filmmaking, and one thing that was clear from that course is that every film maker has a unique perspective. One of our assignments was to go to the farmers' market nearby and come up with a documentary idea involving the market. Naturally when we shared our ideas there were no two that were exactly alike. Look around the boards at the different types of people brought together by CrossFit, and the various reasons they share the interest - there are a lot of perspectives a CrossFit documentary could illustrate.

Just one more voice from the herd:

Always remember that EXECUTION matters. IDEAS are a dime a dozen.

In other words, just because someone else started work on the idea first does not mean that you cannot be successful with a similar idea.

Also, who ever said there was only on doc to be made about Crossfit?

Good luck- and good luck with that film degree. My undergrad is a BS in Radio-Television-Film from UT Austin.

Re: Crossfit Documentary

Wow I did not expect people to be so supportive, I was just trying to air out some frustration and maybe have someone give me some feedback on the documentary that is being shot. Just another example as to why I love this community so much.

Yes that is very true, but I am pretty sure whoever was approved by Coach and his wife were well qualified for the task and would show crossfit in the appropiate light, besides as a filmmaker I feel like doing another documentary after someone else has already done the subject is unethical, unless the movie was so terrible that I felt it did not do justice to the subject (Good example would be the Batman franchise)
That being said if I see the movie or if I find out about it and can see myself
doing a better job or bringing a completely different perspective, than I would jump at the oppurtunity. Heck if they were still looking for people to help with them on this one than I would jump on the oppurtunity.
I just hope the guys who are making this thing are taking as much care and showing as much honesty as I would try to. This crossfit thing is a wonderful and complex subject, and it can easily be misunderstood in the wrong hands, but I have a good feeling that the guys and gals who are doing this are the right people.
