When is the optimal time to do foam rolling? Right after working out, before bed, when you get up? Along those lines...when is the best time to ice stuff? Should you massage first and then ice or vice versa? Should an ice bath be taken right after working out or some time after? To reiterate Greg WOD+ice bath= righteous. Is there a book out there that can answer these and other recovery rehab questions?

IMO foam rolling should be done after you've worked out for the day. I've done it right after working out and I've done it later in the day (doing it while you watch tv with the family is a great way to get an hour of foam rolling in).

Not sure about the icing I go with the contrast thing instead.

anything done to change tissue length(massage, foam roll) should be done as soon as possible after being exercised. Ice should be used after that as it will help maintain muscle length change. Conversely contrast bath for recovery should end with warm bath.

Foam roll before/after/whenever. But before and after have given me the biggest benefits. I typically spend 15-30 minutes on it. We also bought "The Stick" recently and it's picked up where the foam roller left off on certain areas. For example, foam roller is too soft for my quads/hams/calves/it band even though they USED to hurt.

I like to foam roll before so I can feel alive again and get my back much looser and ready to lift or do gymnastics or even just coach and spot.

After is good too, I find. Heck, any time of the day is good for me. This is more about loosening my spine and shoulders up rather than an alternative to deep muscle/tissue massage.
