Re: substitution for swimming

The world record for 50m freestyle sits currently sits around 20 seconds for men and 23 seconds for women. Having swum in high school, I would estimate a typical crossfitter to be able to hit a 45 sec. - 1:15 average 50 free for the workout. The 200m row that someone posted as a recommended sub on the mainsite seems reasonable.

Re: substitution for swimming

I would try one of these motions for roughly :30-:60 seconds at a time with 2:1 rest; in place of swimming, it just makes sense. You actually get a little rotation in this movement like swimming instead of just the cardio of rowing which I feel is an important aspect most WODs lack.

I seriously doubt that the average crossfitter could swim 50 meters in 45 sec during a WOD. Even without the workout that would be pushing it. I swam on the DI level for 4 years and swimming is much more technique than being in shape. I just started swimming masters after having not swam in several years and I have been doing sealfit. Swimming destroys me.

Re: substitution for swimming

swimming is a different animal, I did the 50m swim/25 push up WOD yesterday and the swimming was like nothing I have done in a WOD before. I suggest trying to find a pool to do it. It would be worth your time.
