Safety - Homemade Squat Racks

I am just starting to put together my garage gym and I am debating whether to buy or build my squat racks. The obvious reason for building it is to save money, however, if the homemades are unsafe I would rather spend the money than be at risk of injuring myself.

I would like some input on how safe these DIY racks are? I'm admittedly inexperienced on heavy squats.

Any input/tips/build ideas appreciated!

last but not least, i'm working with limited room, so DIY cage isnt feasible.

THANKS!

Re: Safety - Homemade Squat Racks

Search it. I believe Patrick D has some 4x4's anchored in a bucket of cement with a groove cut at rack height, and a couple other guys have built some sick (professional-looking) ones out of wood. I wouldn't recomment Patrick's design if you're unsteady or going to be lifting heavy a lot, as the slanted edge and "oh ****" rack (the one just below waist level) on a "professional" rack is much safer in case of failure.

Thanks Skylar. I like Patrick D's design, and there are a lot of great looking homemade racks and stands on this site. Since i dont planning on lifting heavy that often. I think i should be cool with making it myself.

Re: Safety - Homemade Squat Racks

There's a thread somewhere about a cage I built by laminating 2X4s together, using heavy guage 1" square tubing for the safety bars.

It's as solid as the day I made it, holding up with no problems to the strains of racking #300 squats ... and of missing the occasional rep. For my peace of mind, when I get closer to #400 squats I'll probably either have a welder make up a half-rack, or purchase something more bomb-proof. But till then ...
