I know nothing of the inner workings and mentality of four year olds, but we are god-parents to one and need to get a fun Christmas gift. (Our own kid is 3 months, so she's easy to shop for.) We'd like to find something interactive, physical, and as Crossfit-isque as possible. We don't want to encourage more couch potato behavior and want to support good habits! It doesn't help that his parents are not much of the active type either.

Any ideas?

Jump rope?

One of those "bounce balls"? (Looks like a giant "Swiss Ball", typicaly has a built-in handle . . . kid sits on ball and bounces (actually a good workout (harder than it looks)). Mom and Dad can actually use the ball as a "stability ball" and/or do situps with it.

As long as we're bouncing things, how about a pogo stick (modern ones are really cool).

*Very* light Dynamax ball?

Soccer ball and cone set?

Rope to hang (tie knots and loops in it to swing on, stand on, climb)?

In-line skates (or hockey skates) . . . might be kind of young yet, but 4 years old isn't *that* young?

Most precious of all: time with you?

bicycle. what kid doesn't want a bike?

football or tee ball set. If the dad has to get out and play too, you get double the benefit, right?

After seeing me flip tires in a couple strongman comps, my 3 and 4 year old just love to flip care tires every chance they get.
Give your God child an old tire from a scrap yard and see what his/her parents think of you.

Little dumbells.... all kids gravitate to them - until they get to be the videogame age and then you're outa luck!

If you have an IKEA store near you, check out the rings and other inside/outside exercise equipment they have. Very affordable and well made and you can order the mounting hardware from them also. If not, look at some of those expanding nylon tunnels kids climb through. You can fold them up small, kids love them, and they get good exercise scooting through.

My youngest stepson is 7 and he loves to play with my paralletes and has yet to hurt himself. Other suggestions that we have:

In line skates, bike(helmet of course), football, basketball, lacrosse sticks (though at 4 you may want to get them a toy lacrosse stick, a junior size might still be too big)

Plan to get:
Heely's (shoes with skates in them), small medicine balls

Believe it or not, my 3 year old son loves to carry around the 4lb kettlebell. Gotta get him on the swings soon =)
