Gloves, anyone??

Just curious. Does wearing gloves while doing a WOD make you less of a crossfitter? I've been tearing my calluses, and I'm afraid I'll get staph or something from the barbell or pull up bar. I know boxes don't disinfect those things regularly( if ever).
So, is not wearing gloves just a macho attitude? Will the "elite" laugh me out of the gym?
Does anyone out there use gloves on a regular basis??

Re: Gloves, anyone??

I am by no means an "elite" crossfiter but I wear gloves when I deal with any WOD's related to barbells or pull up bars.

I asked my Coach whether I could wear gloves and he said HELL Yeah! Why not?

So I think it's really up to you! Who cares what the rest of people think.

Just my 2 cents

Thumbs up Re: Gloves, anyone??

I have gotten close to needing to go to gloves a couple times now. I might throw a pair in my bag just to have in case.

I try to take good care of my calluses and I have good ones (Strong and flexible like well conditioned leather) Not scratchy, dry, rutted callouses that will tear easily.

I learned a few tricks from a couple guys I used to work on a Demolition crew with, they were lifetime cement smashers so they were heads up about it.

-Dremel or file them if necessary, ALWAYS maintain a smooth surface.

-If you press down on them it should not look like there is an invisible coin on your hand, the calloused skin should still conform to your finger.

-Lotion is a must everyday, but never right before you do your work

-Cornhusker's Oil is a great thing too, and can be used prior to work

As far as the perception of Bad-Assness goes, or being less of a crossfitter, if you were in my gym and were bleeding all over I would not be cool with that, and I have a very high thresh-hold for that which is gross. If you need them, wearing gloves is the considerate thing to do.

If you tear a callous off, all the work that went in to making that nice strong, supple callous is erased and you have to start over.

military operators, MMA fighters, football players, hockey player, boxers, etc all wear gloves... and you are concerned to wear them because they might make you look less tough? or b/c of what crossfitters might think?

Re: Gloves, anyone??

I bring gloves depending on weather and WOD.

Community wods = must (usually lots of things that wear on ones hands on those days).

Cold mornings, cold bars, = nice.

Re: Gloves, anyone??

Can anyone recommend gloves that are best suited for CrossFit, I think normal weight training gloves will cause too much friction and problems.

Thanks

Re: Gloves, anyone??

If calluses are involved and there's no tape lying around, then ok wear gloves. Other than that there is NO reason to wear them!

Check out motocross gloves. Snug and designed to hold on to a bar and protect your hands. Any place that sells dirt bikes will have them.

Re: Gloves, anyone??

Man if you want to wear gloves just wear gloves, who cares what anyone else thinks? My personal opinion is I can't get a good grip with gloves.

Re: Gloves, anyone??

I do agree with Max, calluses are pretty important. But if you feel you need to wear gloves, go for it man. If someone is going to cast judgement on you because you're wearing gloves, than they aren't someone whos opinion should matter much to you.
