Question Supportive Underwear for Deadlifting?

I read in some article earlier today not to do deadlifts in boxer shorts. The author recommended wearing bike shorts.

Anyone know the reason for this? What is at risk of being injured? And can bike shorts really provide enough support to prevent injury?

Sorry I read the article at work so I don't have a link to the source.

Re: Supportive Underwear for Deadlifting?

I highly doubt that any shorts will "prevent" injury. If you Deadlift poorly, injury is a good possibility. If you do it right, it is a very unlikely possibility. That said, I've definitely found that compression wear, like bike shorts, help me harness more of a collected feeling of torque or tension while lifting. That may be entirely in my head, but it's helpful.

You can do whatever you want, just don't hurt yourself.

Possibly to protect ones 'stuff' on a guy. Otherwise I wouldn't see the point.

I would say this. I can attest that a male should NEVER ride a bicycle is boxer shorts.

I can imagine that deadlifting in them might result in a similar PAIN.

Re: Supportive Underwear for Deadlifting?

the biggest problem with the Internet is everyone is an expert, haha...

I did a quick search (im at work too) and all I could really find was people mentioning that depending on the fit, boxers are kind of snug and restrictive on the legs (thighs). You wouldn't want to squat or lift and hear a ripping sound...

I guess it makes sense though to wear clothes/ gear that fit properly.

I wear boxers in regular life but always wear underarmour for doing wods. Keeps things in place, but not sure if they can prevent injury.

Re: Supportive Underwear for Deadlifting?

I had a Hernia (lower abdominal) which had to be repaired a few years ago. The Surgeon recommended wearing compression shorts whenever I lifted heavy afterward. His reasoning was that it helped in between sets 1. To avoid similar re-injury and 2. The compression aids blood flow apparently, which should reduce soreness afterward.

I don't get it.

Unless the author was actually advocating supportive briefs for deadlifting - the kind that equipped PLers use.
