Your kids don't care how much you squat

My wife has been making a lot of progress in thy gym recently both mentally and emotionally. Here's one of her recent realizations:

Your kids don't care how much you squat.

No matter how we look, our kids just see mom or dad trying hard to better themselves. It's about the process not the product. Insert other cliche ;-)

Very true! The difference in how a kid grows up watching his parents trying hard (and succeeding) vs. having lazy parents who always take the path of least resistance... it's gotta be profound in how he learns to see life and taking responsibility for your situation.

Absolutely. You are your kid's most consistent role model. Solid reminder to try to be the best one you can be.

I don't know

My boys always want to know how much I lift and if it was the most of course they are 9 and 11 and competitive as all get out. My younger 3 don't care though

I agree. I read the article yesterday. I see it daily in my household and at my classes.
Parents setting the example and doing the right thing can influence more than folks realize; simply by working out and eating right.
Some children will always want to know weights or times, but that it just curiosity....

Re: Your kids don't care how much you squat

My girls are 7 and 9.

they know exercise is healthy
they never ask how much I'm lifting
they know weights make you strong
they're entertained by my grunting and yelling in the morning
they like to play on the dip handles

My wife works out in an on-site gym while the kids are in karate so they're seeing us both as an example. I hope they soak it up. I don't want them to struggle with their weight or feel guilty over every unclean bite they take like we do at times.

I intend for my kids to give me looks of shame and mean words if they know I'm not hitting the lifts I should or increasing them. One day, of course.

Da hell, dad. Get yo stuff together. You shame and bring dishonor to family. Go back and workout some more. Are you not eating or sleeping enough?

**** or get off the pot, da!

Re: Your kids don't care how much you squat

Theres a difference when you have older kids and they also workout.

I have 2 boys a 23 and 17year old and i am 46 (young dad)

My lads always want to know how much i lift and compare... my youngest hit a pr in the bench press 2reps at 110kgs/242lbs the other day and slapped me in the face with it... but like i told him my old pr was 135kgs but even today i can 8rep at 100kgs/220lbs which is my body weight.

So there is always rivalry between us. Now when my wife hits a new PR they are really impressed how good their mum is... they dont give a flying if i hit a PR, they would say... oh thats nice just to try and wind me up.

But i know they are impressed with my numbers and i am also impressed when any of them hit a PR or does something good.

The good thing is that i can work out with them and show them who's boss..... just blow them out of the ball park... and that is always fun
