Oh cmon! That has to be the dumbest question of the day. Clearly this thing is:

The Secret to Etching your Granite-Carved Abs in 10 Short Minutes

Did you not even READ the promotional material???

Re: What is this thing?

Looks like the gym equivalent of the Avocado Slicer (tm), or maybe the Electric Quesadilla Maker (tm).

Overhyped, overspecialized, overpriced.

Re: What is this thing?

It didn't get a very good review though:

" The “ab bench” (http://shop.store.yahoo.com/homegym/abbenrevbyfr.html)
incorporates the same science. We paid $300 for our ab bench and we were
heartbroken when we saw the quality of the product. It’s fairly cheesy. The
price has fallen to $169, which is a lot better, but we put Nick Massman (raahlu@pacbell.net) on the task and we got a much, much
better ab-bench with an improved design. Nick’s version of the ab-bench is something we are proud of; the original is a “piece.” "

Re: What is this thing?

it is a sex machine for guys with impotense, silly, it says so on the first line in the link: "Get Sexy Rock Hard"
(Sorry if this response is inappropriate, but I couldn't resist...that quote is from the machine's site.)

Reviews on the retailers site are positive. Essentially this looks like a combination of an AbMat, which is CF approved, and a high-pulley rope crunch. But, I don't see how this would be endorsed enough to get mention in that article, which I where I first heard of this. It seems to have a fairly sizable footprint, which doesn't seem too consistent with the CF ethos, given that it doesn't appear to do anything that can't be done reasonably well with other equipment.

overpriced - I found one for much cheaper, so maybe not too overpriced
overspecialized - does this only do one thing?
overhyped - I don't need to comment any further or what the link promises

However, I forgot to make any mention of wfs in my link above. You might not want to click on the link if it's distracting to look at stuff that claims to increase your sexiness.
