I have to tell this story. I teach undergrad students at a div 1-a public school. I have a 21 year male student who is athletic and works out often (mostly bodybuilding with some cardio).

Anyway, we start chatting about Crossfit and he seems somewhat interested and really liked what I equipment I have in my home gym. Then I mentioned our only "cardio" equipment the C2 rower.

I tell him to give it a try for 500m. He said he was going to the gym right then and was going to try it. I up the stakes - if you row 1:30 or under I will give you $10.

Later that day, I get an email:
"500 meters in 1:51. That was harder than I anticipated. With about 100 meters left I thought I was in good shape, then my body shut down. I had to wait 15 or 20 minutes to start my chest workout. I'm going to keep at it though, I'm determined to get it down to 1:35-1:40."

--Welcome to Crossfit. What appears easy almost never is!!

Stories like that help to make me feel better about the fact that I regularly get crushed on the rower.

There are others out there that are in the same boat I am.

But I have to admit that I was worried when I first started reading the post that it was going to be about someone pulling a sub-1:30 500m their first time out. While that would have been impressive it would have been hard to take.
