Hi everyone. I have been doing XF for about 1 month now & the results are amazing! Increases in lean muscle & great strength gains. Way better than anything I have ever seen.

I am finally able to get my wife to attempt some strength training after 14 years of prodding & 3 kids. She has been doing some basic strength training in the last year (BW stuff, squats, SL deadlift, bench/shoulder presses, etc.) and has made good progress (from no "boy" pushups to about 15-20 "boy" pushups in a row). Now that she understands basic weightlifting, she is going to start the beginner's program to build overall strength & get used to the big 3 basic lifts. However, she loves the 'cardio' and I know will feel as if she is not doing enough to help lose weight. Any suggestions on additional 'cardio' I can have her do to help promote some body fat loss? I know the diet is a big part & we are working on it. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Chris:

Tons of threads on the cardio effect of standard CF, but a nice demonstration would be to have her do "Cindy" with as few stops as possible and check her HR. I'll bet it will be plenty high and that she will be plenty out of breath "just" from doing PU, Push-ups, and Squats. After that do a search here for other thoughts.

Oh, there are many many many combos that she can do to get her "cardio" in - just about any metcon workout will have her begging for more cardio!

Have her visit www.crossfitfoundations.typepad.com. Have here start reading in the "Beginning CF" bar on the left.

Heh.. cardio? Are you thinking she's going to want more cardio? Or has she said she thinks she needs more cardio?

I'd take it easy for the first little bit to get her used to it (you know the whole "ease into it" advice, follow it). But toss in a few light metcon's (Heck, a good one is just the standard warmup if you do it one after another after another, your heart is going to be pumping). Maybe just have her do one of the old crossfit foundations ones, I'm still doing those, and am easing my wife into them. Maybe have her do the "Three rounds for time, Travel 400m, 15 squats, 10 pushups". That'll get her her "cardio" and isn't too intense that she'll risk being hurt or lose motivation. If it's too easy for her (which it probably won't be), maybe toss in 10-15 situps inbetween the squats and pushups.
