YIKES!! I'm quitting caffeine!!

So, I have had heart arrythmias in the past, sometime I felt faint. But it always went away. It got worse last spring and a doctor told me I suffer from anxiety because being in social situations brought on the symptoms and exercising made them go away.

Well, a few days before thanksgiving, the heart arrhythmias came and are still going. I had a cardiac stress test yesterday and they said I have an atrial tachacardia. "for now it's just an annoyance, but we should follow up."

So, before the doctor tries to put me on medication (THAT gives me anxiety), I'm going to make lifestyle changes that may take care of this.

Friends and family suggest that I drink waaaayy to much coffee. I have been drinking several cups every day since high school, I am now 44. I took a caffeine addict quiz and was in the red.

So, today is my first day of no caffeine. Other than feeling a little heavy and sluggish, I'm fine.

So, have any of you been through this? Have you any insight? Do you believe it's best to go cold turkey (like I opted to do) or to ween off gradually?

I have been doing research and have found some sites in cyber-land that claim that coffee has several unhealthy effects. I even found an herbal coffee substitute.

It's funny. If you want to quit drinking, cigarettes or drugs, there is info and support all over the place. For quitting coffee, sources are scarce.

Thanks for reading.
Joe

I've been trying to cut back myself. Nothing in extreme can be good over the long haul. Sub'd TJ's decaf and herbal teas for the morning jolt. So far so good.

Just curious-

What are the affects of prolonged caffine use?

Make sure you drink LOTS of water and have ibuprofen on hand. My college-aged caffeine-addicted friends who have only been on the crack for a few years have a tough time coming off of it; you will want to make sure you're extra prepared!

Headache is a common side effect of caffeine withdrawal. Lasts a couple of days, I believe.

Lots of water, herbal tea, take a walk in the morning, stick with whatever CF you can handle and make sure your friends and family know that you'll be a bit grumpy for a while til you adjust to the lack of caffeine

I used to drink 3-4 Monster energy drinks a day. Quitting caffiene was the hardest thing I have ever done.

Good luck!

Prepare for some crazy dreams when your coming off!!

I did once, and used green tea as a way to taper. After about 6 months, I was like "what the hell was I thinking". I believe the headache is due to the effect caffeine has on blood vessels, it's used in this product for instance WFS: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Excedrin

Re: YIKES!! I'm quitting caffeine!!

I have quit several times in the past and unfortunately always come back to it--I LOVE coffee. The last time I quit, I tapered and had no real side effects. The two other times, I quit cold turkey and did suffer from severe headaches. The kind that require I lay down for a bit. They did go away around the 4th or 5th day. Of course this is all dependent on the person. I have known people who quit cold turkey and had no real significant side effects. I wish you the best and sincerely hope your lifestyle changes are all that is required. I too hate taking meds.
