I remember a while back hearing many people in the body building community talk about gaining 20lbs to increase 1 inch around the arms. How accurate is this?

I am looking back at my stats and the "Bulkiest" i had ever been was 185 with little over 16 1/2 inch arms.

Currently, I am 156 and have just lost 1 inch on the arm : 15 1/2.

The concept would be funny to test (although unlikely I'll do it ever since i feel in love with crossfit and zone/paleo), considering it would mean a weight of 176 (10 lbs less than where I was) and still have the same size arm as my max.

That might be a good rule of thumb for bodybuilding types, but one obvious exception would be people new to exercise. When I started lifting I don't know how big my arms were, but I was like 5'10" and weighed only 130 or 135. I now weigh less than 160, but my arms have gotten a lot bigger. Definitely more than 1.5 inches or whatever that model would predict.

"TMV"=Too Many Variables

It will be inaccurate every time but there is a point that usually goes along with it and this "rule" is mostly used to illustrate that point. The point is that if you are going to put mass on your arms, don't just do curls and pushdowns, you have to put mass on everywhere--Ya gots, ya gots, ya gots ta do yer squats...

I believe Charles Poliquin was the one responsible for the 20pounds to 1 inch ratio. It's a good rule of thumb, but not a hard-fast rule. The body likes to adapt as a whole, but ocassionally it will grow disproportionately to accomodate stress and adapt (note: lumberjack forearms).

I've seen some 400 lb. women with 25" arms, so it's possible...
