Video Camera and Hand Mic

I'm looking for a good all-purpose video camera and a compatible wireless hand mic. Mainly going to use both for interviews (ala Tony Budding's multiple interviews on CFJ) and the camera for some WOD videos.

I'd like to keep it under $800. If anybody can get me under that price and find some wireless lapel mics too, bff4ever.

Thanks
Brian

Brian, this might be a place to start.

Lavalieres start at $139. Are you looking at an HD camera? I think a decent consumer model can be had for under $500. Keep and eye for deals on B&W, Amazon, etc.

Re: Video Camera and Hand Mic

HD would be nice, but just need something basic enough to do the job.

My all-around web guy talked to Patrick Cummings at Again Faster and he recommended (all wfs):

Canon HV30
Sennheiser wireless mic
Sennheiser me66 shotgun microphone
A cheap monopod from Best Buy

All in all, that'll run you about $1600 or so.

Wondering if we can get less quality, but still reliable for half the price.

HD is a requirement. Do not buy an SD camera.

The Canon HV30 is a nice camera. I have the HV20 for home use, but i would not buy a tape camera ever again.

I would recommend that you buy a camera that records to SDHC cards or to a built in hard drive. The transfer speeds from a SDHC card are must faster than digitizing in real time from a DV tape. The Canon HF20 was being on clearance here in Austin at Conn's for $497 recently.

Sennheiser or Sony makes excellent wireless kits in the $500-700 price range. Do not buy anything less expensive than this. My company sells the Sennheiser kits for $669 which includes both the lav and the plugon for a handheld mic.

Get a decent tripod. You can find a used Bogen on Craigslist for $100. Don't buy your tripod at Best Buy.

The Sennheiser ME66 is a very good shotgun. There are cheaper shotgun mics available for 1/2 the price.
