I finally did a muscle up yesterday. I had some friends over and they asked me why in the heck I had rings in my garage. I told them I was trying to do a muscle up. They asked what it was and I said I can't do one yet, but it starts like this. When I hit the sticking point it felt pretty good, so I kept at it and got over and up.

Kurtis

That's awesome! The rest of you should know that Kurtis is a big guy so his muscle up is even more impressive.

Kurtis,

Congratulations!!! Thanks for posting your success. I made my rings about 2 weeks ago. After reading your post, it motivated me to go out to a local park and try the muscle-up. Although I was unsuccessfull, with a little bit of a cheat jump I was at least able to get the feel for the motion so it wasn't a total waste. Thanks for 'kicking me in the butt' to at least get out there and try it.

You guys are going to love this. A few weeks ago one of the girls/women in my adult gymnastics class almost made a muscle up on her first attempt ever. She got through the pull up and the rotation through but couldn't make the dip section. She's made me a promise that she will work on her dip strength until she can make this skill. I was in shock.

One reason I bring this up is it pointed out the advantage of shoulder flexibility in attaining this move. This girl is not remarkably strong (gymnastics perspective not general public), but she does have very flexible shoulders. Her decent strength coupled with the ability to roll throught the motion very smoothly made this move much easier than it is for most. So anyone who questions how flexibility can impact functional strength, there ya go.
