Pre workout supplements?

I work long physical hours on my feet and sometimes don't have the gas to put forth my best effort on a workout. Diet doesnt seem to cut it alone as when I am training hard I eat well.

What do people use pre workout for the little extra boost? Im not looking for anything too crazy but will of course look into any suggestions before deciding.

thanks

Re: Pre workout supplements?

If it doesn't effect your sleep, coffee is probably your best bet.

Re: Pre workout supplements?

Sometimes for lifting sessions, I bought a tub of preworkout. Sometimes, I would just take an energy short, whey, and like fruit jerky. Energy shots for a buck a pop at the dollar store. Even then, most preworkouts are cheaper nearly.

I seem to get closer to vomiting or dry heaves when I do caffeine or a preworkout for CF metcons so I generally try to avoid either.

Re: Pre workout supplements?

If anything I'll chug back a shot of espresso which always does the trick when I'm dragging butt before a workout.

Re: Pre workout supplements?

coffee doesnt quite do it much anymore.
I was more specifically looking for a store bought preworkout that wont make me too jittery or nauseous.

However I am open to all suggestions, smoothie is not possible.
thanks again

you can try axcel from atlargenutrition. it comes in pill form, but what i like is that it doesn't contain the garbage a lot of other Pre WO's do. I think theres a code for discounts floating around the forums somewhere too... someone else would have to chime in on what it is though

Re: Pre workout supplements?

some people recommend beta-alanine 30mins beforehand (I don't think it really matters when you take it). My point with the smoothie (you can do coconut juice + whey for something simpler) was to get protein + carbs anywhere from 1-2 hours pre-WOD. Timing is based on how you stomach food and what kind of WOD you are doing that day... For me - 1 hour before Fran, not. 1 hour before 5x5 back squat, yes.

X2

I just got some a couple weeks ago, liking it so far. Doesn't leave you feeling so weighed down or pukey during the workout like eating or a shake right before.

Re: Pre workout supplements?

My friend used to have a good story about his preworkout nutrition was a cup of coffee and a candy bar as a gymnast in Ukraine. 96 Olympics Team Bronze.

Soda and a candy bar works well too, but an energy shot works better with the more caffeine. Not an optimal health solution but decent on those days when I missed a meal before coaching.
