So I went to see the Doc today and the verdict is that I strained the muscles on the right side of the middle of my spine. The doc also found that my hamstrings are really tight. I thought I was hitting them pretty hard in my pre-workout stretching. So, am I right to assume that I can do anything that is not back related to keep building stregnth and doing metcon stuff? Or should I sit tight for a week?

Also, does anyone have a good stretching resource that I can check out?

Strains pass pretty quickly so I would just take it a little easy (i.e., no heavy weights). Keep on moving and doing whatever does not result in strong pain (more than 3/4 on a scale of 1-10).

Most people say that stretching before exercise actually reduces your performance and damages the muscle microfibres. Try a mobility routine (Magnificent Mobility or Intuflex) for warmup and then reserve stretching for after your workout.

Here are some links I posted for another Crossfitter with flexibility issues. They have worked wonders for me.

Brad Appleton's Stretching Guide (in my opinion, an online grimoire of stretching information):

The Contortionist's Handbook:

Tricks Tutorials Flexibility Guide (dumbed-down information on stretching for the not-so medically savvy):

Also, try searching for the FlexMutant PDF file. It's a pretty simple stretching program that's given me impressive results.
