Moving to Phoenix...

Hey CF peoples,

I am moving to Phoenix, where there are several affiliates. I'll be in the Biltmore area. My box here on the East Coast has an outstanding community, and perahps even more importantly, an open gym model- in that I can come in whenever I want, 24/7 and do a work out on my own if I am not able to make group classes.

What are the better affiliates in Phoenix do you think? And are there any with open gym? (at least during business hours?)

I know OPT is in Scottsdale; they do alot of training/programming for competitive level crossfitters.

Re: Moving to Phoenix...

It's not close to the Biltmore area... it's actually in Chandler. And while this is a biased opinion, I'm going to say East Valley Crossfit is by far the best gym in the area.

Outside of the subjective commentary... objectively I can say:

1) EVCF team competitors ranked the highest out of all of the AZ gyms at the Open and are competing at Regionals this weekend. All competitors were built out of EVCF and not superstar transplants from other gyms.
2) EVCF has dedicated classes for weightlifting, strongman, kettlebell, running, mobility, and yoga (all taught by high level specialists in that area) that are all included as part of your normal membership
3) EVCF offers services such as physical therapy, massage, dry needling, assisted stretching on certain days for additional fees.
4) EVCF has recently expanded into a bigger 6000 sq ft area.

In any case, the programming is carefully thought through with dedication to building a good base for strength and technique. And we're notorious beer drinkers.

Regarding the 24/7... it's not going to be open ALL day. However the schedule is quite vast so you'll more than likely be able to come in during most group classes (yes you can come to any class you want on the schedule at any time... no signing up for specific time slots). Open gym is outlined in the schedule below. Also, the gym is usually open outside the standard listed hours because lots of coaches come in to do their workout outside of normal class hours and they don't mind having company.

Re: Moving to Phoenix...

Thomas,

There are actually a bunch of good CF gyms around where you will be living. You should visit a few of them and explore your options.
Now my opinion may also be biased, but since I'm from Newark as well, I think that definitely makes Crossfit Uprising your top choice! We are in North Phoenix so we might be a bit far, but you should stop by for a Brick City style workout!

Oh, and welcome to Phoenix.

Re: Moving to Phoenix...

To Lance, Jeremy, and Eric~

Thanks a lot for the input!

I had certainly planned on going to a few gyms in the area to find one with the right "feel." There are many I saw on the map, and Phoenix appears to be laid out in such a way that a ton of gyms are withing 15 min of my place, and if a place is exceptional (as OPT certainly is, and EVCF sounds to be as well) I wouldn't mind the extra drive as long as it is under 30 min.
I will be sure to check out all of these places, as I'll be in Phoenix for 3 years at least, and my gym will probably be the second most important relationship I have after my spouse.

Cheers to all of you.

I was definitely thinking of EVCF because besides drinking beer and having lots of hot chicks, they have a lot of weightlifting experience there.

Re: Moving to Phoenix...

I just recently moved to PHX(31st and Beardsley) as well. I see 4 within 20 mins of me. quality is definitely most important as long my drive time is within 30 mins.

any body have any thoughts on Urban Warfit? or CF Scottsdale?
I'm leaning torwards UW.

Re: Moving to Phoenix...

Check out Crossfit Forbidden. Its in your area as well. Really nice box, new equipment, big place, good people. I used to coach there but moved away 9 months ago. The owner used to be part of UW but left. He's also ex military which based off your picture may interest you.
