Can someone explain the differences between a GHD and Roman chair? What does the GHD do that a Roman chair doesen't? What advantage does the GHD have over the Roman chair as far as situps go?

Regards,
Eric Willis

BFS has a free PDF article on their site that goes through the history and applications of the GHD and describes the differences. Its pretty good. There's a link to BFS under equipment on the main page. Chris

I think the plain roman chair doesn't have a foot plate. You can still do back extensions on it but it makes it really tough if not impossible to crank out full glute-ham raises. That article at BFS is a goldmine of core and posterior chain training info.

I have to tell you, the only piece of equiptment I don't have (which we use on a psydo regular basis) is the GHD. BUT...we never do GHRs, ever! So I may just go for the back extension bench, save a couple of bucks and I could buy it at a fitness supply store a mile from my house. Back extensions: check; Gym Jones type sit-ups (fully extended roman chair SU: check. Anybody see any major problems with this?

I'd say go for it Larry. The POS ain't exactly getting neglected with all the other stuff assigned around here. It feels to me like I'm really contracting hard at the top of the back ext. and activating the POS anyway just without curling up the torso. Doing the roman chair sits alone makes it worth it for the assault they put on the abs.
