I'm joining the Log Sports Team here at University of Washington. Anybody on here know anything about that stuff? Tips for training/competition/etc?

If you know what events they have I might be able to help you out with some of the technique. I have been around it since I was about 4 and competed some when I was in high school.

We've got Sawing, Chopping, Axe Throw, Choker Race, Pole Climb, Obstacle Pole, Power Saw, Burling, Limber Pole, and Caber Toss.

I'm most interested in chopping, axe throw, pole climb, and caber toss.

What kind of training did you do, other than practicing your event?

Nic-

I went to college at the University of Arkansas at Monticello. We competed with 12 other schools in from the southeast in a forestry conclave every year. I personally competed in the pole climb and wildlife ID competitions. As far as the pole climb went, I did a lot of pullups and plyometric squats (or jumping squats). Since the pole was only 20 feet (we climbed without any safety gear--bare handed and with whatever shoes we could find that gripped the best), I worked on explosive movements--not a lot of endurance needed.

As for the other events, I'm not familiar with the caber toss, but the rest is mainly practicing the actual movements, especially with the speed chop so you don't cut your foot off!

We usually had someone come in and give our crosscut sawyers and speed choppers some tips. I can't remember the gentleman's name, but he had competed professionally in the past.

Hope this helps some.

Dustin

Yes, that helps. I know we'll do a lot of specific training with a coach and all that. I'll also keep up the WOD. And I'll try whatever seems fitting until I find that 'perfect workout' for logging sports.

Thanks -

If it's a sport that involves throwing, Dan John has done it. He should have some tips on the caber toss especially as he is a highland games master!

Once you get the conditioning down, which CrossFit will take care of, the rest is practice.
