when doing the hang clean. should you drop low under the weight and then come up like a front squat? or should you drop not so low and use more of the shoulders.
thanks

Shane-

The load you choose will determine this...if you are working with a relatively heavy load it will necesitate a deeper catch. In general the hang clean is not a deep catch but is used to train a rapid sequence of hip extansion, catch, recovery, repeat.

What Robb said plus this.

Do not use your shoulders to horse the weight up. This is true whether the weight is light or heavy for you.

Arms stay straight while the hips and legs drive, then when the arms bend it's to pull YOU under the bar NOT to pull the bar up higher. Good Luck

Every guy who can do a squat clean (rack the bar in a low squat) can also do a power clean (rack the bar in a high squat). Not every guy who can do a power clean can do a squat clean. The squat clean is a more full range of motion. The squat clean allows the lifter to use heavier weights. Which do you think is better? The choice should be clear.
